There’s lots of stuff coming up fast in May that tick the boxes for sustainability and community. Take a look and see if there’s something here to put a spring in your step:

This weekend: Green Homes Sheffield ‘Busy Bank Holiday’

Over the Bank Holiday weekend 3rd- 5th May Green Homes Sheffield is offering 7 more chances to visit Green Homes around Sheffield,  in Sharrow, Greystones, Crookes, Millhouses, Crookesmoor and Hunters Bar. These homes are opening their doors for tours and will show off their eco-features to inspire you. Please come along to learn more from householders who have made their homes warmer, more affordable and greener.

Sat 3rd May, Vegetable and Bedding Plant Sale
9:30-14:30, Hagg Lane & District Gardeners’ Allotment Trading Hut, S10
Surplus allotment society plant sale by members to raise funds towards a new community hut. Coffee & home-made cake available.

Sat 3 May: Transition Café in Derbyshire
3-5pm at ‘Warm, Wet and Windy’, Cromford Mills  
This is a chance to meet with other groups or organisations who are involved in developing sustainable ways of living, finding ways of supporting and encouraging each other, discover what we are all doing and swap ideas.

Thursdays from 8 May:  Sheffield Friends of the Earth Free Film Festival
5:30-8:30pm  University of Sheffield, Arts Tower, Lecture Theatre 3 
Sheffield Friends of the Earth are celebrating their 40th birthday with a free film festival! Screenings will commence at 6pm on each Thursday in May, and a public discussion will take place after each film.

Saturday 10 May: Composting Bonanza Day
10am-4pm Heeley City Farm, Richards Rd. S2 3DT
Heeley City Farm annual day of all things compost. Loads of advice from Compost Matt about how to successfully compost at home – the best types of composter bins to buy, where to site it, etc. Special one day offer – the first 30 attendees will get 5 bags of compost for £10. Composting activites for children – test your composting knowledge, guess the insect and make a compost bug.  Check online for updates.

 

Saturday 10 May: Free Radicals fundraiser

7am to 10pm, Broomhall Centre (Broomspring Lane, S10 2FD
The amazing Free Radicals are performing soul and funk classics in aid of ASSIST. They raised the roof last year, performing to over 100 people who danced the night away and donated over £1000! Join them as they entertain in aid of ASSIST and their excellent work with asylum seekers.

15th May: Food at the Third Sector Cafe: Grow, Give, Make, Sell 
9.30am til 11.30am at the Jesus Centre on Hanover way (come along at 9:20 to give yourself a chance to get a coffee from the Parlour Cafe!)
The discussion this month will be around food – growing it, giving it, making it and selling it.
